Leverage does not change your odds, it shortens your runway

A leveraged position amplifies every outcome but mostly it reduces the number of bad days you can survive. At two times leverage a 50% drawdown wipes you out; at five times a 20% drawdown does it, and a 20% drawdown happens to healthy companies in ordinary years.

That is why leverage should be framed as a liquidity constraint rather than as a way to increase returns.

Maintenance margin and the liquidation price

Your platform holds collateral and requires it to stay above a maintenance threshold. When the position loses enough value that collateral falls below the requirement, the engine closes the position automatically.

That trigger point is the liquidation price, and it usually executes in seconds without asking permission. Two details catch beginners out.

First, the liquidation price moves as fees and funding accrue, so holding costs quietly push it closer. Second, some venues liquidate even when the underlying stock market is closed, because their own reference price never stops moving.

Why small accounts fail first

Smaller balances sit closer to their maintenance requirement relative to volatility, so ordinary noise triggers liquidation. Add concentration in one high-beta name such asTesla (TSLA)and the probability rises sharply, because a single earnings gap can exceed the entire buffer.

The mathematics is unforgiving: losing half your account requires a 100% gain to recover. Avoiding large drawdowns matters far more than capturing large gains.

A safer way to use borrowed size

If you want more exposure than your cash allows, three practices reduce catastrophic risk dramatically. Cap leverage at two or three times, even when the platform offers far more.

Size positions so that a full liquidation costs a percentage of capital you can genuinely afford to lose. Add collateral proactively when the position moves against you, rather than waiting for the margin call.

Reading the risk before you click

Before opening any leveraged order, write down three numbers: your entry price, the liquidation price, and how far the latter is in percentage terms. If that distance is smaller than the stock's normal monthly range, the trade is a coin flip dressed up as a strategy.

You can check recent ranges on any ticker page such asNVIDIA (NVDA), compare total cost across venues in ourplatform comparison, and review the behavioural traps covered in our guide tocommon beginner mistakes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I stop a liquidation once it starts

Rarely. The process is automated and usually completes before you can react, which is why prevention through sizing matters.

Does adding collateral help

Yes, and doing it early is far cheaper than doing it during the move that triggers liquidation.

Is any leverage safe for beginners

Treat leverage as optional. Most long-term investors achieve their goals without it, and the downside of early mistakes is irreversible.
